Who we are

Montana SAF is one of 30 state/multi-state societies that make up the national body known as the Society of American Foresters (SAF).

SAF is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional Society for foresters in the world.

The Montana SAF has 200 members from all walks of forestry. Our members include educators, students, research scientists, economists, consultants and practitioners in public and private settings across Montana. We have four professional chapters that are in uniquely forested regions of our state. Additionally, Montana’s student chapter is based in Missoula at the University of Montana’s Franke College of Forestry and Conservation.

We are dedicated to advance the science, education, technology and practice of forestry; and, to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future use of forest resources to benefit society.
